Spread the Love with Valentine’s Day Air Dancers®
Do you know why we celebrate Valentines Day? Of course we want to have an excuse to show others how much we care, but where did the concept actually come from...
There are many theories and stories about the origin of Valentine. The truth is unknown, but all of the theories describe a romantic and sympathetic hero. There are theories around mating bird season, pagan festivals for fertility and marriage, but the oldest story describes Valentine as a priest in third century Rome and performed secret marriages when Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men.
Another story states that Valentine actually sent the first "valentine" greeting himself after he fell in love with a young maiden who visited in prison. It was said that the young woman was actually the daughter of the jailer, and when discovered he was sentenced to death. It is said he wrote her a love letter and signed it "From your Valentine".
Valentine cards were popular even in the Middle Ages. The oldest known valentine that still exists today is currently housed in the British Library manuscript collection in London. It is a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans. He wrote to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower after being captured at the Battle of Agincourt.
